Book Rant #1
Tuesday, July 24th, 2007A few days ago (Saturday I think), the last book of the Harry Potter series was realeased. I know this because, not only was it on the news, but some of my friends kept talking about it. Two of them had just reread the entire series before they bought the book. On Sunday I was informed of most of the plot by one person who had bought a copy and one who had read the spoilers on the internet. When I get back to school tomorrow I’m sure to be told what happened by everyone else too. Although I’m not really caring, I’m not going to read it anyway, the only book in the series that I have read was the first one (when I was in grade 5), although I’ve been told the plot of them all numerous times.
Anyway, I’ve complely forgotton what my point was, so I’ll say this instead: Why is so much fuss being made over this series? It contains nothing that we havn’t seen before. But then again, it has been a long time since any revolutionary works of fiction have been published, and people are getting bored. I have a friend who dislikes another series of books for the same reasons that she likes this series.
So, I think the reason why everybody is so hyped up about Harry Potter is because the older kids were. They found that kids were reading books. Of cause most of these kids would not have come into contact with any decent books. When I read the first book, one of the reasons why (apart from that it was set in the ‘reading group’ that I was in) was because I read nearly all the books that I came into contact with. One I read at the same time that I liked a lot more was Space Demons (although I never got around to reading it’s sequel, Skymaze).
Personaly I think this an example of how much we listen to our mentors. If you look up to me, and I tell you that something or other is a good thing, then you will also think that it is a good thing. If I tell you something is bad, then you will think that it is bad. And of cause I get the same ideas from my mentors. Very few people on our planet are capable of thinking for themselves, if you don’t believe me then think about peer pressure, fashion trends, and World War 2. Since people rarely think for themselves, it is important that everybody has mentors with different opinions and ideas about the world. That way you have a greater chance of deciding what is right, as opposed to just listening to what you are told. Make some friends with people from other religions, and different views on major issues in the world today. Talk to someone who disagrees with your views on climate change, and actually listen to what they have to say instead of telling them that they don’t know what they are talking about.
I have nothing against reading Harry Potter, or any other books out there. Just remember to make up your own mind about it, and think about what your mentors are telling you. And don’t think that your mentors stop at your teachers, friends and parents: the books that you read are also mentoring you.
